Facet syndrome or facet synovitis is the second leading cause of lower back pain. Lower back pain due to facet-generating pain is usually due to a degenerative or subluxated facet joint that becomes inflamed and painful. Much like dermatitis of the skin.

Lower back pain is a common condition that affects many people. One of the top three causes of lower back pain is called facet syndrome or facet synovitis.  This can occur when the facet joints in the spine become deconditioned over time, irritated, or inflamed. Facet syndrome can result from acute injury or chronic degeneration of the spinal such as osteoarthritis or better known as spondylosis in the lumbar spine. A variety of symptoms include localized pain above the beltline and off to one side of the spine, referred pain into the leg, radicular pain into the leg or groin, stiffness, muscle spasms, and tenderness, and can cause acute 'locked' lower back syndrome.

Facet joints are small, flat joints that are located on either side of the vertebrae in the spine. These joints help to stabilize the spine and allow for movement. When the facet joints become irritated, inflamed, subluxated, or degenerative it can lead to facet syndrome.

There are several potential causes of facet syndrome. These include age-related wear and tear on the joints, injury to the spine, or conditions such as arthritis, and hereditary causes such as hypermobility syndrome. Facet syndrome can also occur as a result of poor posture, obesity, or repetitive stress on the lower back.

Symptoms of facet syndrome can vary depending on the severity of the condition. Some people may experience only mild discomfort, while others may have severe pain that interferes with daily activities. Common symptoms include pain in the lower back, referred or radicular symptoms above the knee, stiffness, tenderness, muscle spasms, and difficulty standing or walking.

Treatment for facet syndrome typically begins with conservative measures such as chiropractic care, natural anti-inflammatories such as curcumin and bromelain, OTC NSAIDS and pain medications, physiotherapy, spinal decompression, MLS cold laser therapy, ice, and rest.
